An Evening Chatting All Things Bolusing with AGRIMIN

Nov 12, 2025

On Tuesday, 11th November, Severn Edge Farm Vets proudly hosted another successful on-farm meeting in collaboration with AGRIMIN Boluses, continuing our commitment to supporting farmers with practical knowledge and hands-on demonstrations. This time, the focus was on cattle boluses and the crucial role of iodine supplementation when bringing cattle in for housing.

Why AGRIMIN BOLUSES with High Iodine Matters During Housing

As many farmers know, iodine is an essential trace element for cattle health, particularly during the housing period. It plays a vital role in thyroid function, metabolism, and overall immunity. Deficiencies can lead to poor growth rates, reduced fertility, and increased susceptibility to disease. With cattle spending more time indoors during winter, ensuring they receive adequate iodine becomes even more important.

Our meeting aimed to provide clarity on this topic and demonstrate practical solutions to help farmers maintain herd health and productivity.

A Warm Welcome Despite the Rain

Although the evening was rainy, spirits were high thanks to the warm hospitality of The Kirton Family, who kindly hosted us in their shoot lodge and covered sheds. The setting provided the perfect backdrop for an informative and interactive session, allowing attendees to learn in comfort while staying close to the cattle.

Adding to the welcoming atmosphere, we were treated to delicious roast beef baps, generously prepared by Mrs Kirton using beef from their own cattle.

Expert Insights from Agrimin

The highlight of the evening was an engaging presentation by Ieuan Davies, the AGRIMIN representative. Ieuan shared his expertise on the benefits of bolusing cattle, explaining how boluses provide a sustained release of essential trace elements, including iodine, over several months. This method ensures cattle receive consistent supplementation without the need for frequent handling or additional feed additives.

Ieuan emphasised that iodine deficiency is more common than many realise, particularly in housed cattle, and outlined the signs to watch for. He also discussed how boluses can complement existing feeding strategies, helping farmers achieve better health outcomes and improved productivity.

Hands-On Demonstration

Following the presentation, Ieuan moved on to a practical demonstration, showing attendees how to correctly administer boluses using Mr Kirton’s Limousin cattle. This hands-on element was invaluable, giving farmers the confidence to apply the technique safely and effectively on their own farms. Questions flowed throughout the demo, covering everything from bolus size and timing to best practices for animal handling.
