Gerard qualified from Bristol in 1997 and tried mixed practice for a few years. He quickly worked out where his level was and moved to Shropshire in 2000 to take up a role as a farm vet. He moved swiftly through the ranks from assistant, to Senior Farm Vet, to Partner and eventually Clinical Director where he is now.

His interests include the local rugby club and cricket club and he can occasionally be seen marking the rugby pitches down at Severn Park.
