Vaccinating Against Bluetongue: A Critical Step in Safeguarding Livestock Health

As the UK faces increasing pressure from the spread of Bluetongue virus serotype 3 (BTV-3), livestock farmers are being urged to take proactive steps to protect their animals. With no treatment available for the disease, vaccination remains the most effective defence against its devastating impact on animal health, productivity, and trade.

What is Bluetongue?

Bluetongue is a viral disease transmitted by biting midges, primarily affecting sheep, cattle, goats, and camelids. While not harmful to humans, it can cause severe illness and death in livestock, leading to significant economic losses and movement restrictions.

Why Vaccinate?

According to the #BattleBluetongue campaign, launched in early 2025 by the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) and Ruminant Health & Welfare (RH&W), vaccination is essential for:

  • 🛡️ Reducing clinical signs and mortality: While BTV-3 vaccines are suppressive rather than preventative, they significantly reduce the severity of symptoms and the risk of death .
  • 🚫 Slowing disease spread: Vaccinated animals are less likely to contribute to the spread of the virus, especially when combined with movement restrictions and midge control.
  • 📉 Minimising economic disruption: Outbreaks can lead to trade restrictions and loss of productivity. Vaccination helps maintain business continuity.
  • 🐑 Protecting animal welfare: Reducing suffering and improving resilience in flocks and herds is a key ethical and practical priority.

A Farm-Specific Approach

Farmers are encouraged to work with their vets to develop farm-specific battle plans using tools like the Vaccine Decision Maker, which helps assess risk and determine which animals should be vaccinated

Current Availability

As of mid-2025, BTV-3 vaccines are licensed for use across England, Wales, and Scotland. They are available by veterinary prescription and can be administered by vets or trained animal keepers.

Call to Action

UK Chief Veterinary Officers have issued strong warnings about the virus’s spread and are urging immediate action

. Farmers are advised to:

  • Speak to their vet about vaccination options.
  • Monitor livestock for signs of illness.
  • Implement midge control measures.
  • Stay informed through trusted sources like AHDB and RH&W.
